The Farm Tender Hay Report – More and more Crop going down

More and more Crop going down

For the fortnight up to the 8th of October 2019 - Volume 43.

This article is bought to you by Marson Tarps and Covers

It's pretty much full steam ahead on the Hay front. Those that orignally said they were going to cut say 500 acres of Crop are now cutting 1500 acres of Crop, those are the sort of ratios were are hearing. Each day the rain stays away this seems to increase.

More and more Canola Crops are being cut.

We understand that something is better than nothing and we do feel for our friends in NSW, Queensland and parts of other states who have nothing. Someone mentioned that the ongoing drought is like the Farmers equivlant of the GFC such has been the impact. No that's huge.

It really has been a cut off Spring further to the South, and those that are doing best as far as Crops are concerned had big rains in the Summer, and that is bearing fruit come this time of the year.

Grain prices could be anything as predictions are there will be less Grain around than last year. WA's season is finishing early and won't reach the heights of last years near record haul.

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:

Prices stayed at a similar level in the previous fortnight to the fortnight before. Buyers seem to be aware that there will be quite a bit of Hay around. Deals have been done (ex Farm Vic/SA) at around the $250/mt mark for Cereal Hay and $300/mt for Vetch Hay.

Old Season Hay has all but dried up

There is plenty of interest in Straw but we will have to wait and see what's around.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said -
Hay pricing around the traps - Northern NSW (Burren Junction) $400/mt for Cereal Hay, Darling Downs (Dalby) $500/mt for Oaten Hay and Narromine (NSW) $450/mt for Cereal Hay. In Queensland buyers get a 50% freight subsidy, so sometime it could work out cheaper for buyers to purchase in Victoria and Southern NSW.

Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - With more Hay being baled in the past fortnight we have seen lots sold ex paddock and without a Feed Test. But we have quite a few buyers still waiting on for other parcels to surface. Vetch and Wheaten/Barley Hay were the first to get baled an it's has been manic trying to keep up with the enquiry and demand. Lots of Hay has been listed that is likely to be baled in the next week or two which will really get the market humming. Prices have been steady at levels the same as the last report. We are also seeing some Canola Hay being listed which is again proving to be very popular after its comeback/resurgence over the past 12 months. Buyers are still wanting a feed test for Nitrate levels before committing to buy.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - We are hearing of a lot more frost damage than earlier expected throughout the mallee which should see a bit more quality hay being cut. Feed tests will be imperative as quality could differ between areas. Vetch Hay has been and is currently being pressed up and tests sent off. So watch the site for Results.

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - Things are really kicking off with a decent amount of ew seasons Hay currently being baled and heading out the gates to buyers. Prices are holding firm at around $250/mt for cereals and $300/mt for vetch (depending on location and feed test). While there has already been a lot of enquiry during the lead up to this new season's Hay hitting the ground, we are expecting that level of enquiry to further increase now that baling has commenced.
