The Farm Tender Hay Report – Hay demand depends on the situation

Hay demand depends on the situation

For the fortnight up to the 22nd of May, 2019 - Volume 33.

This article is bought to you by Vic Feeds

Follow up rain has been patchy and lacking in many areas, and yet other areas are starting to look quite good.

The reasons to buy Hay are wide and varied; the things at play here is what type of Livestock you are running. For example, you might have valuable Stud Breeding Stock that is the core to your business, and you are determined to get them through. Anyone with Sheep or Lambs can justify supplementary feeding right now due to the prices. If you do have grass growing in your paddocks and have livestock locked up to let the grass "get away" then you are happy to spend some money on feed.

These are just examples of the situations Livestock Farmers face; there are many more, right now, there is not one size fits all.

In general, Hay supply is tight, but the urgency has dropped out of the market

This will be an article and a question for another day. Does the Hay and Fodder Industry need AFIA (Australian Fodder Industry Association) to be a body more like GTA (Grain Trade Australia) is for the Grains Industry?

See a rundown on prices below.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Reasonably quiet on the Hay front due to lack of stock and pricing starting to climb steeply. Lots of conversations with buyers who are crunching numbers to see whether to keep feeding them or to de-stock. Unseasonal warmer weather this month will have the early crops jumping out of the ground and fingers crossed there is more rain on the horizon.

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - Following the trend from the last few weeks, there are very limited Hay supplies on the market at the moment. The amount of Straw we have listed is also starting to decrease as buyers are shifting to alternative feeds. There were some decent rainfalls across parts of Victoria over the last fortnight which is starting to ease the pressure a bit for Livestock Producers, however, as the saying goes ‘it doesn’t rain grass’.

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - As Hay option run out there seems to be more and more interest in Cane Trash and Forage Sugar Cane. There is also some interest in Silage, which is new to many up this way.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - It's a little bit frustrating trying to find Hay for those in need. However, the situation is, supply is tight, and it will remain that way into the Winter.

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Straw has been the big mover over the last six weeks but supply is starting to dry up, and any decent type of straw is making no less than $150/mt, this was an average price a month ago

Cereal Hay and Canola Hay were slightly dearer, up $5/mt to around $390/mt as a top price.

Protein Hay has been the least traded form of Fodder due to the lack of supply, and the prices are starting to get out there.
