The Farm Tender Hay Report – Demand still there but supply is not

Demand still there but supply is not

This Hay Report is bought to you by C Pearce Contracting.

For the fortnight up to the 17th of July, 2019 - Volume 37.

Nothing much has changed from the last report a fortnight ago. Stocks are still tight, and demand is still around, but the search for buyers can become exhausting after a while.

It seems to keep raining in the Hay growing areas of SA and Vic, which is a good thing for supply levels in the new season.

In the lead up to the next Hay season, we will consult some of the experts who can outline what you need to do to get the most out of your new season Hay. Watch this space

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:

Cereal and Canola Hay is selling anywhere in the $400-$500/mt range.

Vetch and Lucerne Hay is selling for the same price as it was a fortnight ago. Vetch is making around $500/mt and Lucerne $550/mt

Straw stocks have been exhausted. Mike mentions below that Cane Trash will soon hit the market.

Mike also mentions that some tonnages of Rhodes Grass Hay is moving from Northern to Southern Queensland at prices of up to $300/mt ex Farm.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:

Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Another busy week chasing Hay and Straw, but demand has slowed down since the last fortnight rain events. Word out there is that some Farmers in NSW and QLD have decided to stop feeding and take their stock to the saleyards, as money is running out. Straw is nearly at an all time low with only 1 or 2 listings of large square bales available. Still a few listings of Hay of all varieties still available, but it is running low so be quick as it may not be there for much longer.

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - Hay and Straw stocks continue to diminish and as a result, we’re only seeing small parcels being offered up. With demand as high as it is currently, these parcels are selling extremely quickly (sometimes within a couple of hours of being listed). The freight component is a bit tricky at the moment with the majority of the Hay/Straw being sold on a delivered only basis.

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Parcels of Rhodes Grass Hay from Northern QLD to Southern QLD are moving. Rhodes Grass Hay pricing sits in the $260-$300/mt range ex Farm. Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland are still very dry with some facing the third year without crop. Demand is still there for cheaper Straw options.

Cane trash options out of Northern Queensland will soon become available as harvest is underway.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - We have seen some small parcels being listed as some Southern areas have secured enough rain to ease the pressure on Feed, Straw is still in high demand and short supply, Protein Hay is available, but the price is ruling a lot of people out. If you see something you think will work for you jump on it as it won't last long.
