Mutton cheaper and Lamb prices erratic at Bendigo

This article is bought to you by Stocka and Plastag.

Yarding - 30,000 (+7000).
Lambs - 16,000 (+2000).
Sheep - 14,000 (+5000).

Slightly larger yarding of lambs with 16,000 penned, while the high money for mutton caused sheep supply to surge back to 14,000 head. Lamb quality was much plainer than a week ago, with less really well-finished stock over 26kg cwt available. The sale was erratic, caused by a shuffle of buyers as some regulars went south to Hamilton, the absence of a major domestic processor, and the mixed presentation of lambs. Prices for the best heavy lambs, both shorn and woolly, were firm to a few dollars easier. Where the auction did weaken and show a lot of variance was over the general run of trade weight lambs, 18-24kg cwt, which were $7 to $15/head cheaper. Many of these lambs were showing the affects of the season, having deteriorated in skin and fat condition. Store lamb buyers did step-in and purchase some bigger framed lambs as the market eased. The large lines of genuine and well-bred store lambs were still well supported.

Heavy lamb supply was limited, the best woolly young lambs over 30kg cwt topping at $230/head. Heavy shorn lambs sold to $220/head. The lead runs of heavy lambs made mostly from $180 to $210/head. But showing the lack of weight across the yarding, less than 20 pens of lambs made above $200/head. Quality lambs with weight and condition still trended above 700c/kg cwt. There was a lot of domestic lambs sold for between $140 and $180/head, with carcase rates varying from an estimated 660c to 700c/kg cwt depending on quality and finish. Lambs to the paddock sold at cheaper rates. The bigger framed types, 18-20kg cwt, from $132 to $151 to average $142/head. Smaller store lambs in the 16-18kg cwt range, from $126 to $139 to average $134/head.

Much bigger yarding of sheep, drawn-out by last week's dear rates. Weight and finish across the lead runs of crossbred and Merino sheep remained excellent. Prices were cheaper, with not all processors active or chasing the market as much for numbers. Most sales were from $10to $22/head easier. Big crossbred ewes made from $155 to $210 with a lot of sales making from $160 to $180/head. Heavy Merino ewes and wethers $140 to $190 for the bulk, with just a few pens higher to a top of $203/head. Estimated carcase averages made from 550c to600c/kg cwt across the bulk of the yarding, but there was a big price spread with discounting evident on small and mixed pen lots.
