$360 a head for Lambs at Bendigo

This article is bought to you by Stocka.

Yarding - 32,000 (+5400).
Lambs - 23,000 (+1000).
Sheep - 9000 (+4400).

The high prices helped draw out a bigger yarding of 23,000 lambs and 9,000 sheep. The supply of heavy lambs off grain remained excellent, and the best condition and quality in the yarding was across lambs weighing in excess of 24kg cwt. All the regular buyers attended, but not all operated fully when the market continued its strong pace. Prices across the lead runs of processing lambs were $5 to $20/head dearer in a sale that did fluctuate. A new Bendigo record of $360/head was set for extra heavy shorn lambs up around 38kg cwt.

There was an impressive run of heavy export lambs over 30kg cwt which sold from $280 to a top of $360, with around 700 lambs in total selling for more than $300/head. The bulk of the shorn lambs weighing between 24kg and 28kg sold from $220 to $270/head. The best of the medium trade lambs, around 22kg, were keenly sought to make well over $200/head at times. On a carcass basis the main categories of heavy processing lambs were trending between 930c to 960c/kg cwt. However the sale did show a wide variance, and at the top end there was lambs hitting $10kg, but conversely, there was decent lambs under 900c/kg cwt at times. The supply of well-bred light weight lambs remained limited, the better types selling from $140 to $178/head to a mix of restocking, feeder and processing orders.

Bigger yarding off mutton which included some feature lines of Merino and crossbred sheep. Results varied around weight, fat cover and breed, with the best export and heavy trade sheep dearer but plainer types and odd pen lots of a few head often cheaper than a week ago. The hot spot of the sale was nicely presented lines of Merino wethers around 24kg to 27kg cwt which made above an estimated 800c/kg cw ton occasion. Heavy crossbred ewes were well supported by a northern processor and consistently made from $220 to $272 to average just over $250/head.
