Sellers willing to wait, Buyers willing to wait, therefore it's a stand-off
The feedback from the Farm Tender sales guys is that there is a little bit of a Mexican stand-off going on right now. Some sellers are happy to sit out the current market where prices are softening, while buyers are only entering at what they consider a "market" price. Nobody is in panic mode ATM.
Many are still waiting for Hay to be tested to determine where they sit in the market.
Gippsland, a big consumer of Hay from the Wimmera, Mallee and Northern Country areas of Victoria, are going flat out making Hay and Silage locally to try and save some freight dollars.
Whilst in Northern & Eastern NSW and Southern Queensland there has been some rain events which has ignited some grass growth or offered enough moisture to sow a Summer Crop. For these reason demand for Hay, seen right throughout 2018, has slowed somewhat.
Therefore the current market for Hay sits at around the $240-$290 for Cereal, $350-$400 for Vetch and $230-$280 for Canola Hay. The variables are the test result, location, quality and bale weight.
