The Farm Tender Hay Report – Extra slow going for Hay sales

Extra slow going for Hay sales

For the fortnight up to the 11th of March 2020.

This article is bought to you by Mulcahy & Co Agri Solutions.

Fantastic to see another fortnight of good rainfall across areas of Australia which have been gripped by drought. The most recent rain event mainly fell in the regions that have been missing out a bit. So the dots are slowly being connected up.

Areas that had rain earlier are looking very good right now with good bodies of feed reported in paddocks. Croppers are also buoyed by the moisture as it's helps set up the season ahead.

The good conditions have put pressure on the Hay job with demand chopped off at the knees a few weeks back, and to date, nothing has changed.

What's happened to Hay prices over the last fortnight?

The limited number of Cereal Hay traded happened between $240/mt and $250/mt

The sale of Vetch Hay was also limited with prices remaining unchanged at around $350/mt and these sales were probably negotiated before the rains started

Supply levels of Straw are the highest of any category but demand is the least with no real price indicators.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Sales people have to say:

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Rain continues to fall throughout central and southern Queensland and this time Western Queensland and New South Wales got in on the act. Small amounts of Hay are getting up into Western Queensland for flood relief sourced out of Victoria. We are starting to field a few inquiries from the higher areas of New South Wales about sourcing winter supplies

Shane Ruyg - Queensland based
Shane said - Again another slow fortnight on the Hay and Straw job. Have sold very little of either, and the recent rain up north will slow it up again until we run into the winter months when it will be required at some stage.

Paul Grayling - Mallee Vic based
Paul said - It seems like the bubble has burst on the Hay job with production or high protein Hay receiving the most interest of late, with most Cereals and Straw going off the boil. We are a long time off next season, but with good rainfall in some area's putting feed in the paddocks the demand has dropped right off.

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - Another very quiet fortnight for Hay, there has been very little enquiry and not much is moving. We’re seeing prices drop back a bit particularly for Straw as sellers are keen to get it shifted.
