Cargill plans to roll out a private-label line of plant-based protein products in April, the Minnesota-based company announced Monday.

The line will include meat alternatives in both patties and ground form. It’s a bid by the agribusiness giant to capture a piece of the growing market for plant-based proteins, adding a new option for its retail and foodservice customers.

In a statement, Elizabeth Gutschenritter, managing director of Cargill’s alternative protein team, credited the company’s food science expertise for “some of the best tasting products available in the plant-based category today.”

“We’ve combined our deep knowledge of plant proteins with our expertise in R&D, product development and production to deliver products consumers will love,” Gutschenritter said.

Cargill's Protein Group is based in Wichita.

Much of the buzz around plant-based proteins has been generated by competing meatless “burgers” from Impossible Foods, Inc. and Beyond Meat Inc. (NASDAQ: BYND). Impossible crafts its patties from a mix of soy and potato proteins, while Beyond Meat turns to peas, mung and fava beans and brown rice for its protein sources.

Cargill has invested more than $100 million in Minneapolis-based Puris, whose pea protein is used by Beyond Meat.

Cargill projects that global demand for both animal- and plant-derived proteins will increase 70 percent over the next 30 years. The company reports that it has invested $7 billion globally in animal protein over the past five years while also making “strategic investments” in alternative sources of protein.

“Producing plant-based products across our global supply chain is the logical next step to expanding our ability to meet consumer needs and bring new value to this category,” Gutschenritter said.
