A mix of limited supplies at southern markets and wet weather combined to lift the market substantially higher. Processors stepped up igniting the bidding for any lambs carrying weight, an example of this was a pen of old lambs reaching a top price of $197 per head . Supermarkets and key export companies were active, bidding strongly for lambs that were finished and carrying plenty of weight. The tempo of the heavy export market was more intense with plenty of bidding duels.
Trade competition was significantly stronger with southern processors in the fray, applying pressure to all trade categories. New season young lambs 21 to 24kg were up to $15 dearer making from $103 to $138 averaging 568c/kg cwt. Old trade lambs sold to a bigger group of buyers causing competition to intensify. Lambs 22kg to 26kg selling from $96 to $118 /head. Merino lambs met stronger bidding with a substantial uptick in prices. Prices ranged from $78 to $150/head. New season store lambs attracted competition from southern Victoria. Well-bred types recording a top price of $112
In the heavy export market, most major companies were operating on both young and heavy old lambs. Young lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $142 to $160/head. Over the 30kg made from $165 to $169. Young lambs over 30kg cwt averaged 521c/kg .Old extra heavy lambs sold from $130 to $197/head.
Mutton numbers increased slightly back and quality was either outstanding or fair. Heavy Merino ewes sold $42 dearer to average 261c/kg cwt. Heavy cross bred ewes sold mostly to one major northern buyer who dominated . Heavy crossbred ewes gained $36, making from $57 to $112/head. Trade sheep 214c to 240c/kg cwt.
