Those weird and wonderful Paddock names - I read some survey thing the other day asking Farmer's to divulge their weirdest or funniest paddock/block name/s.
We know all the common ones like Dam, House, Ram, Bull, Horse, Hay Shed, etc. It reminds me of common pub names, Royal, Commercial, Terminus, Railway, etc.
I know on our family Farm, we had Block names rather than Paddock names. That was until about 20 years ago when we did an extensive Fencing and Laneway program and formalised the process. We kept the block names but numbered the paddocks, eg Harveys 1 to 9, as an example. So now, every paddock on the place has an identity, rather than saying the Western most paddock in Harveys.
There are many ways to formalise your paddock map, and there are even digital apps like Mobble, where you can map all your paddocks and get super accurate size (acres/ha), length and width measurements. Very handy tool. I think on our current small Farm, with a dozen paddocks, I am going to sit down and give each paddock an eccentric, out there name, not a common one. As for funny names of paddocks/blocks, we used to own a block called "Coconuts", which was named after the former owner with the same nickname. What funny names do you have?
