There's just less of them... - I must love writing because I remember writing a weekly column back in my 20s and 30s for the local Marnoo newsletter titled "The Square Leg Files". I wrote it for years, and when we moved to Yarrawonga, I started it again (under the same name), and the local paper used to print it. I reckon all up it went for 20 years.
It was a bit of a gossip column about locals and what they got up to. It was angled at seeing the funny or lighter side of living in a Farming community.
I remember I had a group of about a dozen local legends/characters I used to pick on regularly, many with nicknames like The Wilby Burr Cutter, Boofhead, The Guru, Chopper, Pie Guts, Clown, The Mayor, Noisy, etc.
This all started pre social media, and it got me thinking, are there as many characters in our local communities these days? Back in the 70s, '80s and '90s locally, I could put my finger on heaps of characters in our area. They were prominent within our community, had charisma, and had a bit of rascal about them. I would argue that we are a little more reserved these days, a bit more cookie-cutter-like, in that we conform more because that's the era we are in. Don't get me wrong, there are still characters out there locally, just less of them. Who are/were some of the characters in your area?
