Despite a notable decrease in numbers, the overall quality was very good across all categories. The market dynamics underwent a shift due to favourable rains across the region, placing a spotlight on light lambs as restockers took centre stage. This resulted in an increase in prices, climbing by $6 to $13. Notably, a significant volume buyer hailing from Inverell in NSW, alongside numerous local and Victorian buyers, played a key role in the market.
In the export market, heavy shorn lambs emerged as the focal point, with buyers actively pursuing the heaviest pens. This led to a significant uptick in prices, particularly for lambs weighing over 30kg, which saw an increase of $20, selling within the range of $198 to $205. Lambs weighing between 26 and 30kg commanded prices reaching up to $174, averaging at 590c/kg cwt. Despite a lack of significant competition from major domestic processors, trade lambs experienced strong demand, increasing by $6 to $8 and averaging at 580c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were limited in availability, with prices ranging from $67 to $103. Hoggets, particularly those better presented, fetched from $83 and $124.
In the mutton sale, prices experienced fluctuations throughout the auction. The most intense competition unfolded between two companies vying to secure Merino ewes and wethers. Heavy sheep, on average, occasionally surpassed 300c/kg, settling at an average of 296c/kg cwt. Trade sheep encountered a larger pool of buyers, resulting in an average price range of 170c to 242c/kg cwt.
