Increased numbers were offered in the effort to clear out older lambs however, quality took a dive over all categories. Major supermarkets exclusively focused their attention on the new season lamb categories. As a result, there was limited competition within the weight range of 20kg to 26kg for old lambs. Sales for older trade lambs met significant price variations, and a hefty price correction. New season lambs softened $8 to $10 in a bigger pool of 7,500.
Old trade lambs faced an uphill battle with processors keen to operate under 400c/kg cwt, once price trended up from this level, competition dropped away quickly. Trade lambs 22 to 26kg sold from $70 to $116. The trade competition displayed erratic price patterns, causing rates to fluctuate considerably. Within the new season lamb category, approximately 7,400 lambs were available, mostly ranging from 21kg to 30kg in weight. Notably, not all buyers participated in this specific category. Young trade lambs achieved prices ranging from $90 to $132 per head, showing a $8 to $10 decrease . Heavy young lambs softened $8 selling from $130 to $155. Among the lighter weight lambs directed towards processors, prices fell up to $40/head. Demand for Merino lambs was subdued, resulting in prices ranging from $40 to $122 per head.
In the heavy export market, lambs with substantial weight and shorter skins attracted the most robust bidding. The longer wool lambs were generally hit with a price correction of $20, while lambs weighing between 26kg and 30kg dipped $25 selling within the range of $110 to $141 per head.
Competition for heavy mutton weakened considerably despite big runs of outstanding heavy ewes and wethers. Heavy mutton constantly fell under 200c/kg cwt to average 179c/kg cwt. Trade sheep sold to only a few buyers selling from $26 to $44 to average 133c/kg cwt.
