This week's lamb sale in Wagga revealed a subdued market vibe, marked by fluctuating competition due to the mixed quality. While most regular buyers were present, not all major domestic processors participated.
The sale's dynamics were erratic, with feedlots and restockers stepping in as prices fluctuated. Overall, the market experienced a decline of $8 to $15, though lighter weight lambs remained relatively stable or slightly dearer in some cases. Trade lambs weighing 20-24 kg showed significant price variance, with longer wool lambs receiving discounts. The majority sold for $118 to $154, averaging 590c/kg cwt. Lambs weighing 24-26 kg fetched $140 to $164. Merino lambs were reasonably supplied, selling from $106 to $148. Lambs for restocking and feeding sold from $57 to $144.
In the heavy export sale, lambs weighing 27-30 kg sold for $158 to $190, with prices softening as the sale progressed. Heavy lambs in longer wool were overlooked by some processors. Lambs over 30 kg ranged from $190 to $229, averaging 646c/kg cwt.
The mutton sale presented a mixed quality offering, yet there were notable runs of heavy crossbred ewes and Merinos. Despite this, heavy sheep received support from several buyers, contributing to market stabilization. Heavy sheep averaged 265c/kg cwt. Trade sheep sold from $52 to $70, averaging 280c/kg cwt.
