Numbers lifted and quality was fair to very good. There were 17,000 new season lambs offered with only a few odd pens showing dryness however, there wasn’t the weight in the offering as the previous sale. Supermarkets and some key export companies were active with all bidding strongly for lambs that were finished and carrying plenty of weight. The tempo of the heavy export market was more upbeat however, new season trade lambs sold to fluctuating competition.
Trade competition was solid with some companies only seeking young lambs between 20 to 24kg. The tops of these drafts were unchanged to $6 dearer making from $90 to $128 averaging 505c/kg cwt. Old trade lambs sold to steady demand with, 20kg to 26kg selling from $44 to $116 /head. Merino lambs sales were very erratic with a couple of companies pushing prices to significantly higher levels. Prices ranged from $40 to $127/head. New season store lambs attracted demand from the local region and southern Victoria. Well-bred types sold from $33 to $79/head
In the heavy export market most major companies were operating for both young and heavy lambs. Young lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $132 to $150/head. Over the 30kg made from $152 to $175 with the shorn portion topping the market. Young lambs over 30kg cwt averaged 492c/kg .Old heavy lambs sold from $106 to $154/head,.
Mutton numbers slipped back slightly and quality was either outstanding or well covered types under 25kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold to dearer trends making from $30 to $63/head. Heavy cross bred ewes sold mostly to one major northern buyer who dominated across this class. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $26 to $64/head.
