Softer Lamb and much softer Sheep prices at Ballarat

Yarding: 40,000

Lamb numbers jumped to 32,000 yarded. Quality was plain to excellent, with over ½ the yarding secondary plainer types. Not all the usual buying group were present and not all were active in a much softer market across all categories. Bidding was subdued throughout the sale, buyers were selective and had no urgency when bidding. More store buyers were present but selective with store lambs selling $10 to $18 cheaper. Light and med trade were $10 to $20 softer, heavy trade $7 to $15/head cheaper. Heavy export sold to a top of $225 and were $14 to $26 back on last weeks levels.

Lambs back to the paddock under 18kg selling from $37 to $119, and lambs over 18kg made from $115 to $149/head. Lambs to the trade to suit MK orders under 18kg sold from $64 to $108, Lambs 18-22kg, sold from $100 to $147, Lambs 22-24kg, sold from $135 to $155, Lambs 24-26kg made from $153 to $180/head. Export 26 to 30kg sold from $169 to $210 and 30kg and over made $201 to $225/head. The better-quality lambs averaged between 550c to 630c/kg.

Sheep numbers more than doubled with 10,000 yarded, quality ranged from plain to good. A limited field of buyers operated in a much softer market across the yarding, bidding was again subdued and at times buyers were in and out of the market. Overall mutton sold from $15 to $30/head cheaper. Merino wethers selling from $45 to $110/head. Merino ewes sold from $9 to $128 and heavy crossbred mutton sold from $88 to $138/head.
