Sitting still is not an option - I read yesterday where someone said that Ewe Lambs are the new maidens. So we are used to joining Ewes as 1-year-olds, but the trend now is to get a Lamb (or 2) out of a Lamb. Many have been doing this for over a decade, and now it's a we-just-do-it thing for progressive Sheep breeders. And it's a challenge. It doesn't just happen. There is method behind it because it's pushing the boundaries. It's also one of those things that if you did it one way in a particular year and got a good result and did exactly the same the following year, that result can be completely different.
It got me thinking about how we keep pushing to new levels of Production in Ag. Look at growing Wheat. Generally, yields are increasing, and varieties have a shorter growing season, and we are planting earlier. Pull it off, and you will get a top result. These days many Wool Growers shear every 6 months, which wasn't even thought of 25 years ago when it was entrenched in our brains that we only ever did the Shearing every 12 months.
Farmers will keep pushing for higher production. It's in their DNA, and it provides a challenge to get results that they or others haven't achieved before.
Australian Agriculture won't sit still. There will always be leaders who pave the way for others, just like those in the Sheep industry who showed that joining Ewe Lambs could happen. Now it's a given.
