Lamb numbers dropped this week with 9,542 sold at Ballarat which was a decrease of 2,458 head. There was a large range in the lambs offered varying from good heavy lambs down to many secondary and plainer lamb pens that were unfinished and showing the effects of the Winter. The regular buying group attended with not all operating fully in a fluctuating market determined by quality and demand. Heavy lambs sold $5 and up to $10 easier in places. Outstanding heavy and medium trade weight lambs sold to firm with average costs varying from 450c to 500c/kg cwt. Some of the secondary lambs were $5 to $10 cheaper and back $15/head at times. Light lambs sold close to unchanged. Restockers and feeders paid mostly $32 to $105 for store lambs and $19 to $35/head for light Merino lambs. A few light trade weight new season lambs sold to $84, good Merino lambs sold from $98 to $120 and best hoggets made from $76 to $90/head.
Light lambs to the processors sold from $30 to $56, light trade weights made from $58 to $88/head as the costs ranged from 320c to 410c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight lambs were from $95 to $135, heavier trade weights made $115 to $152/head with the average costs varying from 450c to 500c/kg cwt. The heavy and extra heavy lambs sold from $122 to the market top of $161/head averaging between 450c and 480c/kg cwt.
The smaller offering of 1,835 sheep mostly sold unchanged with a few isolated sales up to $5/head stronger as there was slightly more competition from the usual buying gallery. Light sheep mainly sold from $33 to $43 and the medium mutton made $37 to $67/head. Heavy crossbred sheep made from $60 to $104, Merino wethers with cover sold from $61 to $73 and the better Merino ewes were from $60 to $75/head. The best of the rams made from $10 to $22/head. Most of the good quality sheep sales varied in costs from 200c to 260c with the plainer lighter sheep selling from 170c to 230/kg cwt.
