The lamb sale saw numbers decline notably to the previous week, though the quality of the offering was very mixed. A fair percentage of the lambs in the offering were store lambs in varying conditions. While not all domestic buyers were able to attend the sale, the market displayed erratic bidding at times due to lambs showing dryness and not enough finish.
New season lambs trade lambs were mostly unchanged to few dollars dearer. Prices remained mainly within the range of 478c to 575ckg cwt. Young lambs, showing freshness were keenly sought topping at $138/head. lambs weighing between 21 and 26kg were sold at $96 to $140 per head. Old trade lambs were again scarce, with most pens containing small lots of 20 to 60 head. Heavy old lambs were also limited, with a single pen of 35 kilograms selling for $171. Merino lambs were in limited supply and fetched prices ranging from $44 to $74/head. Store lambs and light lambs intended for processors were very mixed, with a $2 dip in price. There was a big gallery of restockers and these lambs returning to the paddock made $31 to $92.
In the heavy export market, not all major companies were at the sale however all other processors actively chased lambs with weight. Young lambs weighing between 26 and 30kg remained mostly unchanged in price, ranging from $140 to $172/head. For lambs weighing over 30kg, buyers were involved in competitive bidding for the limited supply, resulting in prices ranging from $160 to $175/head
Mutton numbers lifted significantly, and the quality varied from very good to fair. Heavy ewe mutton faced steady competition, mainly between two buyers, resulting in prices that were mostly stable, with only a slight increase in value, averaging 123c/kg for the heaviest portion. Trade sheep were in big demand by a large group of processors, fetching prices between $26 and $32/head.
