Numbers were back slightly. The quality of the offering ranged from very good to fair. While not all domestic buyers managed to make it to the sale, selling was upbeat and gained momentum on all well-presented pens carrying weight and shape. Not all major supermarkets or key domestic processors attended the sale.
There was a notable uptick for new season lambs in the trade market which resulted in a lift of up to $10. Prices consistently hovered between 510c to 530c/kg. Young lambs weighing between 21 and 24kg were sold within the range of $110 to $138/head. Old trade lambs were keenly sought resulting in stronger demand. Lambs weighing between 22kg to 26kg ranged from $78 to $130/head. Merino lambs experienced strong demand overall, resulting in prices firming. Merino lamb ranged from $74 to $120/head. New season store lambs attracted competition from two states, with well-bred types seeing a $10 lift and reaching a top price of $122.
In the heavy export market, all major companies were active in purchasing both young and heavy old lambs. Young lambs between 26kg and 30kg were $3 to $10 dearer at prices ranging from $140 to $164/head. For lambs weighing over 30kg, buyers ignited the bidding sending prices $14 higher, selling from $165 to $189. Old lambs were sold within the wide price range of $120 to $184/head, with an average price of 471c/kg cwt.
Mutton numbers decreased significantly, and the quality varied between outstanding and fair. Heavy ewe mutton faced weak competition between two buyers mostly. Prices were unchanged to a few dollars cheaper averaging 119c/kg cwt. Big Merino wethers eased $2 to $7 making from $38 to $65/head. Trade sheep sold to a bigger group of processors selling between 100c and 120c/kg cwt.
