More competition helps lift the market at Ballarat

Lamb numbers dropped to 23,270 penned, quality improved through the week lighter runs ranging from plain to excellent. More buyer competition on the rail in a mixed result market. Extra store competition had light lambs back to the paddock selling firm to slightly cheaper while lambs to feed on sold to $10 dearer. Light trade sold to $5 better, medium trade were $6 to $8 stronger in places, heavy trade were to $6 dearer. A limited number of extra heavy export lambs were offered, sold to a top of $225, selling firm to $6/head cheaper.

Lambs back to the paddock under 18kg selling from $20 to $114, and lambs over 18kg made from $96 to $164/head. Lambs to the trade to suit MK orders under 18kg sold from $68 to $114, Lambs 18-22kg, sold from $94 to $152, Lambs 22-24kg, sold from $128 to $167, Lambs 24-26kg made from $153 to $175/head. Export 26 to 30kg sold from $168 to $208 and 30kg and over made $196 to $225/head. The better-quality lambs averaged between 580c to 660c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers decreased to 6,500, quality ranged from plain to very good. More competition with a north exporter re-entering the market. The market had mixed results as prices bounced throughout the sale. Light sheep sold firm, medium weight sold to $5 dearer and heavy mutton gaining $10/head in places. Heavy Merino wethers selling from $105 to $135/head. Merino ewes sold from $43 to $125 and heavy crossbred mutton sold from $87 to $147/head.
