Numbers fell notably on the back of last weeks price correction. Quality improved with big runs of grain finished heavy lambs. Despite the uplift in quality the market lacked direction at times causing price variations. A key supermarket did not attend and a major export processors was present but did not make a purchase. Another Exporter did not attend due to winter maintenance. Shorter skinned lambs did create some enthusiasm but the stronger bidding was always in short bursts.
Trade competition fluctuated with the market softening as the sale progressed. Trade lambs 20kg to 24kg regained some of last week’s losses making from $96 to $151. Lambs 25kg to 26kg improved $18 making from in p to average 640c/kg cwt. In the heavy export market competition was stronger particularly for lambs weighing more than 30kg cwt. The bulk of the better heavy export lambs gained $15 to $27. Lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $162 to $195/head. Over the 30kg made from $192 to $235/head.
It was a mixed yarding of mutton with heavy ewes in reasonable supply. Not all major processors were at the market. Heavy sheep sold from $105 to $140/head. Trade sheep ranged from $74 to $116/head.
