Numbers increased despite the cheaper market the previous week. The quality of the offering was outstanding with the majority extra heavy lambs All buyers made it to the sale however, not all participated. Both key super markets were operating along with the usual domestic processors. The market found its mojo and powered ahead over all categories.
Trade competition was very strong due to the limited supply and more competition. There were 2,150 new season lambs offered with the trade portion selling from $100 to $140 to average 593c to 623c/kg cwt. Heavy suckers were few making from $146 to $152 averaging 538c/kg cwt. Old trade lambs with fat cover 21kg to 26kg sold from $100 to $142 to average 540c/kg cwt. Light weight lambs to the processors ranged from $51 to $90/head. Merino lambs sold from $66 to $122/head.
In the heavy export market weight and shorter skinned lambs ignited the bidding. The market was notably stronger with several companies entering the fray on well finished pens. The bulk of the heavy export lambs sold up to $12 to $13 dearer. Lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $135 to $162/head. Over the 30kg made from $150 to $183/head to average 504c/kg cwt.
It was a small group buyers who attended the mutton sale. There was solid competition amongst the group, with crossbred ewes keenly sought by a northern buyer. Heavy Merino ewes and wethers sold from $86 to $120 to average 325c/kg cwt. Heavy Crossbred ewes made from $90 to $120/head. Trade sheep with cover averaged 258c to 291c/kg cwt.
