Lambs tread water at Ballarat

A smaller yarding of 6,537 lambs, quality was again mixed with the last of the older lambs coming through. Lambs off feed presented in excellent condition while the secondary types with rough skins ranged from plain to good. Not all the usual buyers were present and not all were active. Light store and processor lambs eased $2 to $5/head, medium and heavy trade gain more interest selling $3 to $5/head better. Heavy export 26 to 30kg gained $4 and lambs over 30kg lambs sold slightly cheaper $/head, but were dearer c/kg with not as much weight offered this week. The very few new season lambs offered gained some interest with restockers paying from $45 to $100/head and processors paid $90 to $123/head.

Last season store lambs back to the paddock made $22 to $59, old trade lambs 18 to 22kg made $72 to $100 and lambs 23 to 26kg sold from $87 to $123/head to average 380c to 440c. Export 27 to 30kg made $119 to $130 and over 30kg sold from $133 to $156/head to average 420 to 440c/kg.

Sheep numbers were back to 2,356, quality was patchy ranging from plain to very good in another cheaper market with all weights and grades $5 to $10 cheaper. Merino wethers made $30 to $45/head. Merino ewes from $10 to $45 and heavy crossbred mutton from $15 to $65/head.
