Numbers increased significantly on the back of last week’s dearer market. Most buyers made it to the sale however, key export companies and supermarkets did not buy. There was an excellent line up of heavy export lambs with the majority grain assisted. Competition for heavy lambs weakened, with the market at times struggling to hold above 500c/kg cwt for the bigger lambs. Trade lamb demand was patchy with a lot of lambs looking quite wintry, which reduced competition
Trade competition was erratic, with busts of bidding only happening on the shorter skin types. Trade lambs 21kg to 24kg slipped $4 to $15 making from $106 to $144 to average 537c/kg cwt. Lambs 25kg to 26kg softened $4/head. The bulk selling from $131 to $155/head. Store lambs were plentiful buyers were looking for frame and youth and these lambs made from $64 to $127/head. Merino trade and extra heavy lambs sold from $86 to $152. In the heavy export market competition fluctuated as buyers became selective as the sale progressed. The bulk of the heavy export lambs sold $5 to $6/head cheaper. Lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $140 to $167/head. Over the 30kg made from $165 to $198/head averaging 527c/kg cwt.
It was a bigger field of buyers in attendance and most were keen to acquire trade mutton. Quality was very mixed and at the heaviest end mutton unchanged averaging 340c/kg cwt. Heavy wethers topped at $145 to average 387c/kg cwt. Trade sheep sold to stronger competition with sales lifting $5 to $10, isolated sales more.
