Lamb prices shot at Ballarat

Lamb numbers dropped slightly to 17,900, quality was good to excellent over the heavy trade and export lambs that presented off supplementary feed. The quality dropped away quickly with a large portion of the yarding in winter skins and lacking fat cover. Not all of the usual buying group attended and not all were operating in a much softer market across all categories. The market opened softer in place, bidding become very subdued as buyers were selective across all weights and grades. Light store and trade lambs were to $14 to $20 cheaper, medium and heavy trade sold $20 to $30/head cheaper. Heavy export took the biggest hit selling to $25 to $35/head back on last week’s levels. Across the yarding, the better-quality well finished lambs averaged from 480c to 530c/kg cwt.

Lambs back to the paddock selling from $30 to $133/head, with buyers going up in weights this week. Lambs to the trade to suit MK orders under 18kg sold from $42 to $90, Lambs 18-22kg, sold from $70 to $110, Lambs 22-24kg, sold from $98 to $136, Lambs 24-26kg made from $122 to $160/head. Export 26 to 30kg sold from $127 to $168 and 30kg and over made $155 to $176/head.

Sheep numbers increased to 4,800, the market opened similar to a week ago and gain some momentum with more competition this week, to be $3 to $6/head dearer in places. Heavy Merino wethers made from $93 to $110, Merino ewes $55 to $115 and heavy cross bread mutton from $86 to $140/head.
