After the strong sale of the previous week, lamb prices faced a decline, spanning from $12 to $37, despite a substantial decrease of 20,000 lambs. Heavy lambs across all weight categories bore the brunt of this downturn. Although competition for heavy lambs remained robust, buyers were cautious about exceeding 700c/kg. Noting not all exporters were making purchases.
In the heavy export market lambs within the 26 to 30kg range, were sold at prices ranging from $175 to $215, while those surpassing 30kg carcass weight fetched prices between $206 and $260 to average 697c/kg cwt. The overall tone in the trade lamb market was weaker and signalled a reduction of $10 to $15, with a specific demand observed for neatly shorn trade types. Trade lambs, varying from $130 to $174, averaged at 703 cents per kilogram carcass weight.
Lambs suitable for feedlots and restockers witnessed varying demand patterns. The heavier trade weight lambs intended for feeding experienced a dip of $13, while other lightweight lambs maintained steady prices on either side the bulk selling from $90 to $150/head. Merino trade lambs sold at $139 to $175.. Hogget numbers dwindled, with sales ranging from $88 to $150.
On a positive note, heavy sheep prices saw a moderate improvement, increasing by $6 to $11, with an average of 326c/kg cwt. Trade sheep prices softened despite a big gallery of buyers. Ewe mutton 18kg to 24kg sold from $68 to $89 to average 289 to 325c/kg cwt.
