Lamb prices hit a peak at $259, though buyers dialled back their enthusiasm compared to the previous sale. Despite supply being slightly lower. Quality was very good with some exceptional grain fed lambs travelling al the way from Loxton in South Australia. However, secondary lambs lacking adequate fat cover faced substantial discounts. All domestic and export buyers were at the sale
Trade lambs sold $4 to $11 cheaper, however buyers paid last week’s rates for the tops of agents drafts. Trade lambs weighing 20 to 24kg fetched prices ranging from $128 to $168, averaging 690c/kg cwt. Store lambs once again sold to mixed trends with prices ranging from $63 to $143/head. Merino lambs carrying some weight and fat cover were keenly sought selling from $130 to $186. Meanwhile, in the export sale there was plenty of competition, but buyers rarely wanted to surpass the 700c/kg cwt threshold. Lambs weighing 26 to 30kg sold for $170 to $204, and those over 30kg fetched $208 to $259, also averaging 690c/
At the mutton sale, a wide range of stock was available to accommodate all buyers, from the leanest types to the four score heavy-weight Merinos and crossbred ewes. While the usual group of buyers attended, the most intense competition centred around trade weight categories. In contrast, only a few buyers showed interest in purchasing heavy mutton. Heavy mutton prices experienced a $34 decrease, with sales ranging from $78 to $120. Meanwhile, trade sheep were sold within the price range of $44 to $78/head.
