Killer Technology - We wrote about how Machinery Dealers are finding it hard to attract Mechanics to their business last week. Take a read here. On the back of that, we had a couple of Mechanics reach out to tell us how it is for them.
Interestingly they see the divide between technology and their capabilities becoming wider, to the point where some of the things they do are nearly beyond them.
Both the Mechanics that reached out said they love fixing things and fixing things for Farmers. That's what excites them. But as the technology v capability divide gets wider, they said the enjoyment in the job gets eroded. They feel torn, "the Farmer needs the Machine working, the boss wants a profit, and I have to learn new things all time just to keep up", they said. "Everything is connected to a damn computer. As an example, if an interior light fuse blows, you can't start the engine. And the Tools and Equipment you need now, no wonder we have Trucks going out to jobs now rather than Utes" they added.
As we explained the other day, if one part of the puzzle is not working, then the whole thing starts to break down. Perhaps the big Manufacturers don't realise they are doing a disservice to themselves and everyone along the chain by complicating Machines with more "killer technology". It affects Dealers, Mechanics and then the consumer, the Farmer. No wonder they are struggling to find people to enter the Mechanic field, and from what the Mechanic guys are saying, that struggle will only get greater. Fixing things just got harder.....
