It's the Grain Growing equivalent of Double Cropping - The appetite for Sheep and Cattle Breeders to keep improving productivity is ongoing. It's a very progressive industry now that keeps pushing the envelope. Has extra production, through more Lambs and Calves, got us, in part, to the position we see ourselves in now? A supply (and confidence) issue that has virtually halved prices since the peak.

We spoke last week about how Ewe Lambs are the new Maidens, which has lifted productivity for Breeders who are getting results by successfully Lambing down Ewe Lambs. Some have been doing it for a decade or more now. 

Combine that with the growing organisation called Towards 90. We wrote about them a few weeks back. For them, it goes beyond getting just getting the Ewes in Lamb. It's about techniques to keep as many Foetuses and then Lambs alive and getting them through until weaning. It's the Cropping equivalent of getting 2 Crops in the one year (double Cropping).

Cattle Breeders are pushing the envelope in a similar way with getting Heifers in Calf earlier. All these extra numbers are putting pressure on the system, which has forced prices south. Confidence is shot, so let's hope things can get back on track soon.
