The lamb market showed considerable demand over all categories, despite the impending short trading week ahead due to the Australia Day holiday tomorrow. Although all the usual processors were present at the sale, not all major export companies were in operation. A standout of the sale was strong demand for over 5,000 hoggets, with prices topping at $195.
Trade lambs were available in limited numbers, and prices held steady, ranging from $130 to $170, with an average of 693c/kg cwt. Lambs weighing between 22 to 24 kg fetched prices between $155 and $170. Store buyers were not as active, and lambs returning to the paddock sold for prices ranging from $71 to $148. Hoggets saw intense bidding duels over many pens, with the better-finished ones selling for prices between $100 and $195.
There was a robust demand for heavy lambs from various buyers, although they were cautious about exceeding 700 cents/kg cwt. Overall extra heavy lambs were unchanged. Lambs weighing between 26 to 30 kg were sold in the range of $170 to $222, while those over 30 kg fetched prices from $215 to $258, with an average of 696 cents/kg cwt.
