If only the old Woolsheds could talk - A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about how Cotton is about to pass the Wool industry in terms value it creates for the economy each year. Have a read here.
It got me thinking about the infrastructure legacy the Wool industry has left us, mainly with all the old Woolsheds. Cotton, a newer industry in this country, it doesn't have the same kind of history attached to it.
There is some pride in having one of these old iconic old Sheds on your property, and it doesn't matter if it's working or no longer required. But the hardest thing is to keep maintaining them. They are like houses. If no one is occupying them, they soon go to rack and ruin. And some of these Sheds are money pits. Hence the reason why Farmer's let them go, many are no longer commercially viable. Similar to all the old Homesteads dotted around rural Australia. But this country has so much Wool history that it would be a shame if at least a small percentage isn't maintained.
I am bullish on Farm tourism as an industry that can give Farmer's a new and viable revenue stream. Tourism could be a vehicle by which some of these great buildings could be used and preserved. If only those old Sheds could talk......
