I can't believe it's not Butter.... - Butter vs. Margarine. I remember as a kid when we only ever spread Margarine on our toast and bread. Today, I haven't seen a Margarine tub in our fridge for yonks. And I can't remember the point in time when we transitioned over to Butter.

As it turns out, it was Nepoleon (yes, that Nepoleon) who instigated the birth of Margarine. This is what I read this morning from Janette Bernard in her Prime Futures newsletter. "It turns out that Butter's first real challenger, Margarine, was a result of an award that Napoleon offered to anyone who could invent an alternative to Butter that was cheaper and more shelf stable in order to feed his army. Margarine was the result."

We all know where Butter comes from, but Margarine's ingredients are a little more clouded and processed. But we all remember those tubs plastered with those Yellow Canola Crops, and we know that some Margarine has Canola Oil in it. So both products have some relationship with the commodities we produce. But as we know, all Oils aint Oils (another subject for another day).

I'm not saying one is better than the other. It's up to the consumer. But what I am interested in is when Margarine's market share took over from Butter and then when Butter made a spirited comeback (or has it). What do you prefer, Butter or Margarine?
