Hay Report - The Hay Market needs a strong Dairy Industry

For the fortnight up to the 5th of July 2022.

By Dwain Duxson

Some may have heard that we have a Toyota Hilux beaut Ute giveaway competition going on ATM. To go into the draw, all you need to do when listing Hay (or Grain) is make sure you put in the number of units (tonnes or bales) and the price, and it needs to add up to $20,000 ex GST minimum. See an example below.

Good to hear that a few processors have surpassed the $10 barrier for Milk solids. I have spoken to a few Dairy Farmers, and they are pretty pumped about it.

The Hay and Fodder market needs Dairy Farmers going well.

The rain along the East Coast will be devastating for many, and flooding has gone inland as far West as Dubbo. Places that were wet, but dried out somewhat, are now wet again.

The new Hay season is upon us, and it will be important that we get some favourable conditions that will produce the quality Hay needed going forward. As we have seen in the past, things change quickly, and panic can set in if things turn for the worst and you have Livestock to feed. We have to replenish the stocks with quality Hay this time around.

Growth in the Hay growing regions of South Australia and Victoria has been slow of late due to the cold conditions after the good start. But overall, things are in a pretty good position at this stage of the season.

If you're looking to buy Hay and don't have the funds right now, check out this article on how to buy Hay with DelayPay.

The AFIA 2022 National Fodder Conference is on from the 25th to the 27th of July. It's the premier event for the domestic and Export Hay markets, and I urge you all to attend. Click on the link here and scroll down, where you will get all the info. See the flyer below.

What's happened to Hay prices over the last fortnight?

Vetch Hay sold in good numbers over the last fortnight, with prices stabilising. Vetch Hay, with a decent (not top-notch) test, sold around the $270-280 a tonne mark.

Oaten and Cereal Hay prices lifted a little with some good lines making $220, $225 and $230 a tonne.

A few parcels of Silage Rolls ex Gippsland and sold locally made between $73 a Roll.

Good quality Clover Hay made up to $275 a tonne.

Straw sales got to $70 a tonne, with not much traded this fortnight.

All prices quoted are ex GST and ex Farm.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:

Paul Grayling - Mallee, Vic based

Paul said - The last fortnight has seen more enquiry for good quality non-weather affected Hay, of which supply is rapidly thinning out. That being said, getting your Hay tested is imperative as you can price accordingly and still offer a product that will do a job for someone.

Leading the sales charge is still Production Hay, with Clover and Rye seeming the most popular. Also, some of the better Cereal Hay is selling well.

Shane Ruyg - Qld based

Shane said - Another solid fortnight with over 1000 tonnes sold with the cold snap sending buyers to stock up on some good quality Hay. Cereal Hay is in hot demand with not a lot of good quality out there until the new season Hay comes through later in the year. Hoping to see some more Hay listed in the coming weeks now that the EOFY has come and gone.

Mike Pickard - Travelling around

Mike said - Oaten, Barley, and Lucerne Hay has been popular along with Silage. I’m finding Rolls are popular at the moment for ease of feeding on smaller properties, with good sales around the edges of the major towns.

There were some good sales of small Bales of Lucerne ($12) into Sydney to the Racehorse industry.
