Hay Report - Have you got your Load Looper yet?

For the fortnight up to the 15th of March 2022.

By Dwain Duxson

Firstly, anyone involved in the Hay industry, especially those carting Hay, would be fully aware of the issues associated with tossing rachet straps over your load. Well, now we have a solution that makes the job a hell of a lot easier and quicker to boot.

Introducing Load Looper, the invention designed by Ian and Andrea Hamilton, who are Farmers at Tatyoon, Victoria. Ian best describes how Load Looper works here. "Load Looper is a weighted ball device that attaches to a loading strap to carry the strap over the highest legal loads and simplify the loading process. Stored and transportable in a purpose-made zinc-coated carrier which mounts to the Truck rail for easy access when loading".

Farm Tender was so impressed with the product that we put our hand up to sell and distribute Load Looper. So to watch a video on how it works or to buy Load Looper go to the website here.

The Hay market for the last fortnight has been solid, with Vetch Hay and Oaten Hay have been the most popular sellers.

Paul makes a good point below about the rising cost of Grain and how those feeding Livestock might look towards Hay as an alternative within the mix.

The Elephant in the room is freight rates. This might put a dampener on Hay demand, especially loads that have to travel any sort of distance. We are seeing rates rise to $6-$6.50 and higher as those doing the freight don't want to get caught out, making a loss on the trip.

The Floods have been devastating for those up and down the Eastern seaboard. Farmers affected are in clean up mode and are using Hay to feed hungry animals. We have a couple of listings up of people coordinating Hay deliveries into these areas. Check out this listing here and this one here for contact details. If anyone can help in some way, shape or form, it would be much appreciated.

What's happened to Hay prices over the last fortnight?

If anything, we probably saw a little bit of a rise in prices over the last fortnight.

Good quality Oaten Hay made up to $200 a tonne last week, with most Cereal Hay selling in the $150-$180 a tonne range.

Good quality Vetch rolls and an equally good parcel of big squares made up to $275 a tonne this week.

All prices quoted are ex GST and ex Farm.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:

Paul Grayling - Mallee, Vic based

Paul said - Not a lot of change on the Hay Front with Protein Hay still being nibbled at. There has been a couple of A1 sales over the last fortnight, with the price reflecting the quality. I have also noticed that filler type Hay is also being purchased as the stock job remains healthy. Grain prices could perhaps contribute to some action within the Hay Job. Time will tell.

Shane Ruyg - Qld based

Shane said - The past fortnight has continued in the same manner as previous with lots of enquiries and sales. The trends were pretty similar, with Vetch and Cereal Hay, mainly Oaten, being the most sought after. With the Diesel price exploding in the last week or so, we are likely to see freight pricing increase. This may be a good reason to start buying as if it continues, it will only get dearer.

Mike Pickard - Travelling around

Mike said - Inquiry for Hay is picking up slightly as we head into the cooler months. Farmers are starting to fill a few sheds to get them through the winter months. There is a little bit of inquiry picking up for small Feedlotters chasing Straw for feed mixes.
