Goodbye old friend - I read today that the government is going to phase out the cheque. But by 2030, that is.....
The cheque has served Farmers well over the years, and there are still Farmers using cheques, but no, they don't really cut it these days, and it's probably not the cheque's fault. It may be more to do with Australia Post. We would still receive half a dozen cheques each month on average, and more often than not, it can be 3 weeks to a month from the day they were written out to the day they arrive. And we are all guilty of putting the outgoing cheque on the dash of the Ute and forgotten about it for a week or more.
Some Farmers run a tight ship and juggle money around with overdrafts and the like, and who is to know if there are sufficient funds in the account 3 weeks or a month later when it comes time to be processed.
We also have instances where our website name is Farm Tender, but our business name is The Farm Trader Australia Pty Ltd and cheques written out to $5k and over can't be processed over the counter if the exact entity name isn't right. Many write them out to "Farm Tender". So then you have to get the cheque writer to go through the process again. We have found a way to get around this by depositing them through an ANZ ATM. Goodbye, old friend.......soon....
