Yarding: 42,500

For the first market back at Ballarat, agents yarded 34,150 lambs. The quality ranged from plain to excellent with more shorn lambs presented in excellent condition. The usual buying group attended, with extra store buyers present in a stronger market across the yarding. Bidding was intense throughout the yarding, light lambs sold to $30 stronger, medium and heavy trade sold $20 to $40/head better and more in places. Heavy shorn export lambs topped at $298 and sold $30 to $50/head dearer.

Store buyers were more active in the market paying $65 to $148 for lambs under 18kg to go back to the paddock and lambs over 18kg made from $135 to $164/head to feed on. Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $98 to $149/head, to average 680c to 740c/kg cwt. Young lambs in wool 18 to 24kg sold from $134 to $210/head. Lambs 24 to 26kg made from $195 to $235 and over 26kg lambs made from $228 to 258/head, with an average range of 760c to 830/kg cwt.

Shorn lamb with good fat cover were again in high demand and sold extremely well. Lambs to the trade 18 to 24kg made from $150 to $216, lambs 24 to 26kg sold $205 to $242/head to have an average range of 790c to 850c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $228 to $270 and over 30kg sold from $276 to $298/head to average 840c to 860c/kg cwt. Hoggets made from $65 to $198/head for the crosbreds and $65 to $103 for the merino’s.

Agents penned 9,184 sheep, quality ranged from plain to very good. All the usual buying group were present and operating in another dearer market. Merino wethers selling between $68 to $95, gaining $20/head. Merino ewes made from $34 to $91 to be $15 to $25/head dearer. Heavy Crossbred ewes sold from $48 to $90, selling to $20/head stronger. Most mutton averaged between 240c to 280c with a number of sale over 300c/kg cwt.
