Numbers jumped considerably on the back of last week’s dearer market. Supermarkets and some key export companies were not as active. The sale begun with on a cheaper note, while plainer bred and conditioned types showed big discounts. The tempo of the market was $10 to $15 cheaper. Despite the price drop in most classes the pace of the market remained lack lustre.
Trade competition was infrequent and prices fluctuated around quality. There were 2800 new season lambs most 21 to 27kg in weight. Not all buyers competed in this category. Young lambs made from $125 to $146/head. Old trade lambs 21kg to 26kg sold from $117 to $146 to average 493c/kg cwt. Light weight lambs to the processors ranged from $27 to $75/head. Merino lambs sold to varied price trends making from $25 to $92/head. In the heavy export market weight and shorter skinned lambs attracted the strongest bidding however, prices did drop $10 to $12/head. Lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $117 to $151/head. Over the 30kg made from $137 to $177 to average 473c/kg
It was a bigger group of buyers that attended the mutton. There was token competition amongst the group, with buyers not willing to chase the sale. The market sold $12 to $28 cheaper, with heavy sheep bearing the brunt of the cheaper trend. Heavy Crossbred ewes made from $68 to $90 to average 234c/kg cwt. Trade sheep averaged 198c to 265c/kg cwt.
