The sale showed improvements over trade lamb categories, with a key supermarket buyer returning after a lengthy absence. Prices in general improved $8 to $15 for the top lines of trade lambs. Quality across the yarding was quite good with a big portion of the offering grain assisted. Heavy export lambs were well supplied and quality was outstanding. The market at times fluctuated with big highs and lows in values.
Trade competition improved noticeably with recently shorn lambs paid premium prices. Trade lambs 21kg to 26kg sold from $118 to $150 to average 566c/kg cwt. Light weight lambs to the processors ranged from $56 to $88/head. Merino lambs sold from $86 to $122, while the heavy portion made from $134 to $165/head. Lambs returning to the paddock sold to a small field of buyers, selling at $48 to $100/head.
Not all export buyers operated or operated to capacity. The strongest bidding was for lambs weighing above 30kg carcass weight. The bulk of the heavy export lambs were unchanged. Lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $138 to $170/head. Over the 30kg cwt made from $164 to $187/head to average 519c/kg cwt.
A bigger field of buyers operated in the mutton sale, with not all major processors operating. It was a very good offering with a fair percentage heavy ewes. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $90 to $113/head. Heavy Crossbred ewes made from $90 to $127/head to average 346c/kg cwt. Trade sheep sold $10 to $20 cheaper, selling at $56 to $75 to average 340c to 361c/kg cwt.
