Yarding - 31,434

A supply surge this week with more than 25,000 lambs yarded for an increase of 9000 head. Quality was generally good, although despite the bigger numbers lambs weighing more than 28kg cwt were still fairly limited. The difficulty exporters are having sourcing heavy stock was evident during the auction, with bidding at its most competitive on the heavier grades. The market for export grades gained momentum and the best results and highest price of $181 for young lambs was set late in the auction. Some sales of export lambs were $15 higher than a week ago. However when all results were averaged-out from across the sale the price trend for trade and heavy lambs was similar to slightly easier in carcass weight terms than a week ago but on much bigger numbers sold. Lighter lambs under 20kg cwt often sold to softer trends of $5 to $10/head in a fluctuating result.

The heaviest young lambs over 30kg cwt from $162 to a top of $181 for a pen estimated around 34kg cwt. The main run of crossbreds in the 26-30kg cwt range $130 to $160 to average $149/head. Quality in terms of finish and lamb shape were factors in the trade lambs where 22-24kg cwt pens sold from $107 to $129. There was estimated sales as high as 580c/kg for isolated pens of very fresh trade lambs that suited the top end domestic orders. Overall a range of 470c to 560/kg covered young lambs to processors, with the main categories averaging from 510c to 545c/kg cwt. Lighter weight lambs mostly $50 to $90. A specialist Ballarat restocker paid to $122 for trade lambs to shear, most smaller lambs to the paddock from $50 to $80/head.

It was another subdued mutton market with not all processors operating fully. One exporter dominated on heavy mutton and was rarely chased by other buyers. Most sheep sold in a compressed price range of $20 to $35/head regardless of weight, working out to less than 100c/kg cwt.
