Lamb supply lifted to 32,575 head to be up 6000 on a week ago, while sheep numbers doubled to just over 10,000. There was some magnificent extra heavy lambs, including a stand-out pen of crossbreds off beans and estimated to weigh 40-42kg cwt which topped the market at $238 to be well clear of anything else. The extra heavy lambs over 30kg cwt held their value on a week ago. Softer price trends were evident over the heavy and trade lambs, despite some excellent quality lines of lambs in the 24-28kg range being available. All the regular buyers were in attendance although some weren’t purchasing to capacity and a key northern exporter was focused on very heavy lambs and wasn’t as active on stock under 30kg cwt. Prices for lighter weight lambs under 21kg cwt was solid, particularly for the well-bred and shaped lines thanks to multiple buying orders including processors, MK bag lambs plus restockers and feeders. There was a volume feeder order from SA.

Export lambs in the 30-35kg range mostly sold from $185 to $215 with just a few pens of super heavy weights higher to a top of $238. The estimated cost over a run was around 610c/kg to be similar to a week ago. The heavy 26-30kg cwt lambs sold from $140 to $185, and the best of the heavy trades from $140 to $162. The general run of trade lambs $127 to $145. There was still some pens costing above 600c/kg in these lambs, but overall cost averages when all results were tallied pulled the rate back to between 550-580c/kg cwt. Light lambs still sold strongly, the feature lines showing breed quality and shape generally from $110 to $130; smaller MK style lambs from $70 to $115. Carcass price costs for lighter lambs was similar to the rates being achieved for the top end slaughter stock.
The sheep market was dearer, particularly over nicely weighted trade Merino ewes with good fat cover which sold above 300c/kg cwt at times. Heavy crossbred ewes $75 to $93, with the general run of ewes mostly $40 to $70. There was still some very secondary light ewes down below $20 at times.
