Pork Belly Prices through the roof - US

The US has a new found craving for Pork Belly. So much so that it has pushed prices up nearly 80% this year for the part of the Hog (Pig) used to make bacon.

Once considered a more unhealthy byproduct of a hog compared with prized cuts like pork chops and tenderloin, bacon has become a guilty pleasure amid a broader embrace of fatty meats.

Hog Carcass and Loin prices have also risen but not at the same levels as Pork Belly.

Fast food chain Arby's introduced "Triple Thick" bacon sandwiches and it has proven a huge hit for the franchise.

The National Hog herd has risen to 71.7 million head by the end of June according to the USDA, that's up 3 percent from last year.

Prices per pound rose to US$2.10 last week
