No extra heavy Lambs presented at Ballarat this week

With 16,240 lambs yarded, numbers were similar at Ballarat this week. Quality ranged from average to good, but there were no extra heavy lambs yarded, with the bulk of the better presented export weight lambs selling to local processors. The usual buying group attended but operated selectively in a mostly firm market, that ranged a couple of dollars either side of last weeks levels. Heavy lambs reached $175, with the medium trade weights 22kg to 24kg, selling mostly from $150 to $169.50/head. Feeders and restockers were again very active and paid from $105 to $143, and a pen of heavy feeder lambs selling at $170, lighter smaller lots sold from $36 to $90, they mostly sold from unchanged to $2/head up on last week. Restockers paid $119/head for Merino ewes.

Light weight 2 score lambs sold from $119 to $128/head. Light trade weight 2 and 3 score lambs 18kg to 22kg, sold from $127 to $158/head and averaged around 680c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs 22kg to 24kg, sold from $150 to $169.50/head and ranged from 620c to 720c, to average around 660c/kg cwt. Heavy trade weight lambs 24kg to 26kg, sold from $162 to $174.60 and the few pens of export weight lambs sold from $174 to $175/head. The best of the heavier unshorn young lambs sold from $168 to $174/head. Heavy crossbred hogetts sold from $100 to $147/head. There were 6,931 sheep yarded, down on last week by 1,769 head. Quality covered all weights and grades, with some very good runs of heavy Merino wethers penned, along with the usual runs of crossbred ewes. There were also good numbers of lighter sheep yarded, suiting mutton processors. Sheep mostly sold to a dearer trend to be from unchanged to $10/head dearer in places.

Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $58 to $79 and averaged around 385c/kg cwt, with the very light sheep selling from $10 to $56/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $73 to $102/head and ranged from 350c to 440c, with the Merino mutton averaging around 405c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $112 to $120, the heavy Merino wethers sold from $108 to $148, with the medium weights selling from $80 to $111/head, the heavier Merino sheep ranged from 405c to 450c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $97 to $147/head and averaged around 390c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $5 to $60, and heavy crossbred wethers sold to $160/head.
