Littleproud heaps praise on Prince Charles as a champion for Wool

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud has welcomed Prince Charles' support for wool.

Speaking in the Australian Financial Review today, Prince Charles, who began the Campaign for Wool in 2010, said the switch by many clothing companies from natural wool to synthetic fibres could be an environmental catastrophe for which future generations would pay.

"Prince Charles understands Australian wool is grown in an environmentally sustainable way," Minister Littleproud said.

"He has always been a great supporter of wool and we thank him for it.

"For the environment, wool is good.

"Nowhere is wool produced more sustainably than here in Australia. Our farmers produce the best wool in the world and they do it in the most environmentally friendly way. Our farmers love their land.

"If environmental sustainability was key consideration in fashion house purchases, Australian wool would dominate the clothing shelves in department stores.

"Australian wool is far superior to competing synthetic fibres because of its light weight, strength, durability, warmth and water-repelling qualities.

"I'm so glad a person of Prince Charles' stature and global influence has a good understanding of the environmental superiority of Australian wool over other products."
