Hurricane Harvey looking stronger than first thought

Hurricane Harvey is about to unleash in Texas, US which may reach a category three causing destructive winds but its the torrential rainfall for days on end which is going to cause catastrophe flooding through large parts of southern Texas including Houston!

Widespread 300-800mm is expected but as of tonight the models showing local falls of 1000mm of rain the next week as the system stalls over southern Texas. This is ONE METRE of rainfall!!!

Devastating flooding would be a result from this as well as as storm surges along the coast plus winds.

Corpus Christi has shut down and Padre Island which is a very popular seaside vacation town where thousands of people go for a beach holiday will take a direct hit. A predicted tidal storm surge of around 12 feet (3.65 metres) storm surge which will add further to the flooding problems.

This has the potential to be one of the worse natural disasters in the US and Texas since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, oil refineries are expected to shut down and 700 members of the National Guard are being called up as Hurricane Harvey, the most powerful weather system to hit the US in almost 12 years, barrels towards Texas.
