GrainGrowers group disappointed in "Glyphosate map"

With the importance of access to safe and nutritious food in the spotlight more than ever, GrainGrowers was disappointed by the approach taken recently in a report released by the University of Sydney that included a ‘glyphosate map’. GrainGrowers believes that the way the report was released detracts from some of the key research findings, namely that there is low risk of environmental exposure from glyphosate, that glyphosate is safe to use and that Australia is not a ‘hotspot’ for contamination. The report also seemed to be presented in a way that confused land use and farming systems across various regions of Australia.

GrainGrowers believes that scientific research on the safety of glyphosate must be trusted and continue to highlight the robust and science-based framework used by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), the national regulator. APVMA independently assess all chemicals used by agriculture as well as evaluating chemicals and registrations of products to ensure they are safe, effective and fit-for-purpose.

Access to safe, effective chemistry and associated technologies is essential for agriculture and significantly contributes to food safety and security.

“Our growers are focussed on strategic, sustainable and safe chemical use in their cropping systems.” said Brett Hosking, GrainGrowers Chairman.

“What is of concern is that the release of the report seems to have focused on alarming people. It also appears to imply that research and development of glyphosate alternatives is being motivated by something other than the fact that every sector is always looking at new ways to innovate.”

“Our farmers ensure we have a secure and safe food supply. It’s important that they be able to continue to access the tools and technology that enable them to deliver high-quality produce.”
