Farm Tender

Farm Tender Hay Report - Volume 1

Welcome to the first edition of the Farm Tender Hay Report (FTHR). The aim of the report is to give sellers and buyers an idea of what Hay is selling for in the main Hay growing areas across Eastern and Southern Australia.

Last fortnight
Ninety percent of the Hay being sold on the Farm Tender website is going from South to North. The biggest selling line of Hay has been Vetch Hay, both new and old season.

This demand from the North has given the opportunity for Southern NSW, Northern Victoria and the Mid North of SA Farmers to move both old and new season stock. Those who have Road Train access are at a distinct advantage as a Road Train (82 large bales) can achieve savings of up to $60/mt over a B-Double (64 large bales) Trailer.

However this current demand hasn’t lifted prices, but it’s freeing up the market which could lead to higher prices in the future. We believe that good testing Cereal and Vetch Hay, shedded and with solid bale weights should command a premium down the track. The longer the rain holds off, the more frantic this market will get

Straw sales are virtually non-existent, with Cattle Farmers opting for old season Cereal Hay for use as dry Cow Hay

Note - These prices have been derived from data of what was sold in the last two week on the Farm Tender Website
