Extra Heavy Lambs hit $300 at Ballarat

Lamb supply was similar with 23,427 head yarded at Ballarat, following steady rain last week. Quality ranged from average to good, with anexcellent penning of heavy and extra heavy lambs yarded. The usual buying group attended and operated with more urgency in a mostly dearer market. Trade weight lambs sold from $5 to $10 head up on last week with the heavy and extra heavy lambs selling to $10/head dearer and more in places, on weight. The extra heavy lambs reached $300/head to be a centre record, for a large pen of crossbred lambs estimated at 42kg cwt. Medium weight trade lambs, 22kg to 24kg, sold from $184 to $210/head and averaged around 805c/kg cwt. Restockers and feeders were active and paid from $137 to $177, with the light weights selling from $3 to $80/head to be dearer.

Light weight 2 score lambs 12kg to 18kg sold from $108 to $152/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs 18kg to 22kg sold from $153 to$185/head and averaged around 795c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs 22kg to 24kg sold from $184 to $210/head ranging from 775c to 850c to average 805c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score trade weight lambs 24kg to 26kg sold from $214 to $245/head. Extra heavy export lambs 30kg+ sold from $238 to $300/head to average 745c/kg cwt. Light trade weight Merino lambs sold from $120 to $143/head to average around 740c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred hogetts sold from $135 to $200/head and Merino hogetts sold to $138/head.

There were 9,610 sheep yarded covering all weights and grades. Quality was mostly good, but there were less wethers and more lighterMerino sheep penned. Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $66 to $129 and averaged around 530c/kg cwt, with very light 1 scores making from $15 to $76/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $89 to $155/headranging from 470c to 630c to average around 565c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold to $168 to average around 605c, heavy Merino wethers sold from $150 to $175 to average around 608c/kg cwt, medium weights sold from $110 to $169/head. Heavy 3 to 5 score crossbred sheep sold from $124 to $214/head to average around 530c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $10 to $139/head. Crossbred wethers sold from $150 to $230/head.
