Elders new agronomy recruits

A fulfilling career in agriculture beckons for two of Australia’s best and brightest young agronomists who have just entered into the Elders Graduate Agronomy Program.
University-educated graduates Lanita Steer and Tessa Sexton will work closely with Elders experts in South Australia and Victoria, and receive practical training and on-the-ground experience across the broadacre and horticulture sectors.
Elders Head of Technical Services, Graham Page, says the Elders graduate program is tailor-made to an individual’s skills and competencies, providing mentoring and training to participants across different environmental conditions, rainfall zones and production systems.
“Our graduates work closely with some of our most senior experts, receiving first-hand experience in how we support our clients with valuable advice and effective solutions for their farming businesses,” Mr Page.
“We develop our graduates’ professional and technical skills, support their personal growth and set them up for a successful career. The program also helps to ensure a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and best practice across the Elders business,” he/she said.
Lanita and Tessa say they are eager to begin their cross-commodity work program, expand their expertise, support farmers and build a foundation for a successful and rewarding career.
Lanita Steer graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Agriculture. She grew up on a plant nursery in the Yarra Valley and worked in orchards, cut flower farms, and other nurseries during her studies.
Lanita is looking forward to building on her horticulture experience, and branching out into other areas of the Elders business while based at the Elders Roseworthy branch in South Australia.
“What excites me most about the role is the opportunity to meet new people and to gain valuable experience so I can become the best agronomist I can be,” Lanita said.
“There is no doubt it will be challenging, but I’m fortunate to be working with such a supportive company in Elders. I just can’t wait to get out there.”
Tessa Sexton completed an Advanced Diploma in Agribusiness Management and Agronomy at Longerenong Agricultural College. She grew up on a dairy farm near Dingee and a broadacre cropping and sheep property near Charlton in Victoria.
Elders’ heritage, reputation and expertise drew Tessa to the Graduate Agronomy Program, and she is looking forward to wearing the famous pink shirt at the Elders Yarrawonga branch.
“Working with Elders is something to be proud of,” she said.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to learn from my experienced colleagues and to apply this knowledge to a broad range of operations. My Yarrawonga base will allow me to indulge my passion for broadacre cropping, while also learning about horticulture on farms in the region.”
In its fourth year, the Elders Graduate Agronomy Program has produced a number of high performing agronomists who have since secured full time positions with Elders.
