Dearer trend for mutton at Bendigo

Yarding - 32,000 (+2000).
Lambs - 18,000 (+2000).
Sheep - 14,000 (0).
A few more were lambs yarded as we head towards the Christmas break. Quality has now become very mixed, with a lot of variance not only across the yarding but in individual pens due to the season. Bidding did fluctuate around lamb quality and condition. The market also began on a weaker note, before improving mid-auction, which added to varied results for agents and vendors. Price results overall ended-up similar to a week ago, with some of the better trade weight and store lambs showing modestly dearer trends of $3 to $7/head.
There was not a lot of weight or finish in the lamb yarding. The best heavy young lambs sold to $216, with only 8 pens above $200/head.Heavy shorn lambs reached $210/head. Most of the fresher conditioned heavy trade weight lambs, 24-26kg cwt, made from $176 to $197.Underneath this, was a lot of plainer domestic lambs, between 18-21kg cwt, which fluctuated from $135 to $166/head depending on presentation. On a carcase basis, the better processor lambs did hold a base of 700c to 720c with bounces out to 750c/kg at times. Conversely, secondary lambs were discounted below 700c/kg. Store lamb competition remained strong with orders from Warracknabeal, Horsham, Echuca, Shepparton and the local Bendigo area. Lambs to the paddock were firm to a few dollars dearer, the better framed types making from $134 to $153 and smaller types selling from $90 to $130/head.

Another quality yarding of sheep which included lines of very good heavy Merinos and crossbred ewes. Processors were keener this week, and the mutton market showed a dearer trend of $5 to $10/head to regain the corrections of a week ago. Extra heavy crossbred ewes made from $180 to $210; heavy Merinos sold from $160 to a top of $210/head for both wethers and ewes. On a carcase basis the heaviest sheep well over 30kg were estimated at around 550c/kg, while the good lines of trade and heavy Merino mutton all pushed back over 600c/kg cwt
Note: There is only one more sale at Bendigo this year (December 16). The saleyard will then close over the Christmas New Year period, with lambs and sheep to resume on Monday, January 6 2020
